As we all know, Pastor Robert Jeffress, a Rick Perry supporter, recently stated that noone should vote for Mitt Romney because Mormon's belong to a cult and are not Christian. Does he realize that the Mormon's belong to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints? That is the official name of the mormon church. "Mormon" is a nickname that was given to the members of the church because of the Book of Mormon.
Anyone who worships Jesus Christ is called a Christian. Apparently, part of the evangelical argument for Mormon's not being Christian is that the "founder" of the Church is Joseph Smith. Actually, the founder of The Chruch of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is Jesus Christ. And even with that argument, that would mean Lutheran's are a cult as well because they were founded by Martin Luther. Ridiculous!
If believing in the bible and Jesus Christ, supporting the family as the basic unit of society, and trying to be law abiding citizens makes Mormons a cult - so be it. Call 'em whatever you want.
Noone should vote for Rick Perry! He should have distanced himself from this pastor and clarified his statement immediately.
Well....don't hate the messenger;)
ReplyDeleteCult, as defined by the dictionary is "a particular system of religious worship, especially with reference to its rites and ceremonies"
Cult, can probably be said about many churches and religious sects and be true. His referring to the LDS church as a cult...not really a lie.
Moving on to the "Christianity Card", as I like to call it. Let me start by agreeing with you, that this pastor can not judge anyones salvation, or christianity, only God can.
However, there is a point here that I think is often missed, being a Mormon doesn't automatically make you a Christian anymore than being a catholic, lutheran, methodist, 7th day adventist, etc., makes you one. Being Christian is a heart matter not a head or works matter and the only one who can judge our Heart is the one who created it.
I agree, this pastor, probably not the best spiritual figure to be associated with when it comes to running for office. I am sure his words will affect Gov. Rick Perry, wether he distances himself from him or not.
My biggest concern with both the pastor in this situation and the reaction of thie church is that christ Followers have missed the bigger picture here, the shedding of innocent blood. Where does Romney truly stand on that, and can we trust that he is being honest based on how he has governed in the past. that is what the church, any and all churches should be concerned with.
At the end of the day we are accountable for how we voted. I could not in good conscious, ever, knowingly vote for one that could potentially further the abortion agenda.
The best response and only response to this entire matter is prayer. As the bible states, no good thing will he withhold from those who seek his face.
So, I pray that we would seek His face and not His hand and that His will would be done in this election, on earth as it is in heaven.
Peace :)

Where I do
If the pastor was using the word "cult" as defined in the dictionary, he would be using it to refer to his own church and not to slander someone elses. There is the dictionary definition and there is the colloquial definition... which makes people think of things like Heaven's Gate, the Manson Family, or the Branch Davidians. He was obviously using the word as a scare tactic.
ReplyDeleteAnyone who is a true Mormon, baptized and active in the church, accepts Jesus Christ as their Savior and believes that it is only in and through Him that we can be saved. I do agree however that everyone is at varying degrees to their knowledge and testimony with relation to the atonement.
I will definitely be praying for the right person to lead this country in the next election because it sure ain't the incumbent.
So are you saying anyone who isn't a true mormon, baptized and active in the church isn't saved, or a true christian?
ReplyDeleteNot at all. What I was saying is that anyone that is an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints accepts Christ as the Son of God and their Savior; thus, they would be considered a Christian. As I said in my original post, anyone who worships and is a follower of Jesus Christ is a Christian. As for salvation, I dare not judge.
